False Premises/False Promises: LUMA Festival (collaboration with Jacopo Mazzoni)

Our project investigates the spiritual and creative dimensions of AI, drawing inspiration from pre-scientific systems that sought to categorize the universe in sevens: seven musical notes, classical planets, deadly sins, steps in the great chain of being, and alchemical metals. These symbolic frameworks attempted to impose order on the unknown, much like how AI models "hallucinate"—inventing plausible fictions to bridge gaps in data. The cultural legacy of these earlier systems reminds us of the risks AI poses today. If we fail to interrogate its boundary between reality and illusion, we risk repeating the same epistemological mistakes. Our work places two images, real and synthetic, in dialogue as a way to reflect on this tension and challenge what we accept as truth.
